Wandering Tattler (Heteroscelus incanus)

General Description: Wandering Tattlers (Tringa incana) are medium-sized shorebirds with medium-length legs and bills. They are slate-gray overall with a white belly and a white eye stripe. The wings and tail are unmarked gray; the legs are yellow. In breeding plumage, the face is striped, and the underparts are heavily barred with dark zig-zag lines.

Taxonomy: Charadriiformes, Scolopacidae, Scolopacinae. Formerly Heteroscelus incanus.

Favored Habitat: High arctic mountains during summer, rocky shorelines during winter.

Where to Find: Don't look for Wandering Tattlers around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them on rocky coasts during migration and winter.

Comments: Breeds in mountains of Alaska and northwestern Canada; winters along the Pacific coast from central California to central South America.
