Golden-fronted Woodpecker (Melanerpes aurifrons)

General Description: Golden-fronted Woodpeckers (Melanerpes aurifrons) are medium-sized woodpeckers with black-and-white bars on the back (ladder-backed) and golden-yellow on the back of the head. The underparts are gray, and the rump is white. Males have red atop the head.

Taxonomy: Piciformes, Picidae, Picinae.

Favored Habitat: Saguaro woodlands.

Where to Find: Don't look for Golden-fronted Woodpecker around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in the brushlands and open woodlands of Texas and Oklahoma, and south into Mexico.
