Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)

General Description: Savannah Sparrows (Passerculus sandwichensis) are medium sized, sexually monomorphic, streak-breasted sparrows. They are gray-brown above, light below, and usually have a yellow wash on the face and eyeline. They usually have a central spot on the breast, the tail is notched, and they have an eyering.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Emberizidae.

Favored Habitat: Around Las Vegas during winter, open desert with shrubs. Otherwise, treeless areas with grass or shrubs, especially near water.

Where to Find: Savannah Sparrows are uncommon around Las Vegas, but look for them during winter at Red Rock Canyon NCA and Corn Creek on the Desert National Wildlife Range. They are uncommon, but reliable during winter at the Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve.
