Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna)

General Description: Eastern Meadowlarks (Sturnella magna) are chunky birds of fields and prairies with yellow front and belly, black bib on the yellow front. The back is mottled, and they have a long, pointed bill. They also have dark and light head stripes, and a bit of yellow in front of the eye, and white outer tail feathers. Sexes alike. Bright colors fade during the non-breeding season.

Taxonomy: Passeriformes, Icteridae.

Favored Habitat: Open flat areas such a grassy prairies and farm fields.

Eastern Meadowlark (Sturnella magna)

Where to Find: Don't look for Eastern Meadowlarks around Las Vegas. Rather, look for them in southern Arizona and southern New Mexico, and throughout the eastern US.

Comments: Eastern Meadowlarks look exactly like Western Meadowlarks and can only be separated by voice.
