General: Black Burying Beetles (Nicrophorus nigrita) are 13-18 mm in length, all black, with orange clubs on the antenna tips. The elytra are smooth, short, and do not cover the entire abdomen.
Black Burying Beetles (Nicrophorus nigrita) are usually found around small dead animals. Adults will crawl under the carcass, work together to move it to soft soil if necessary, and then bury it. Females deposit their eggs on the carcass, and then male and females care for the young after they hatch.
Family: Burying and Carrion Beetles (Silphidae). |
