General: These medium sized, gray ants, with black bands around the abdomen, are common at middle and higher elevations on Mt. Charleston and other mountainous areas around Las Vegas. These fast-moving ants seem to be everywhere and like to climb inside your pant legs when you sit down to rest. Fortunately, they are not prone to bite or sting.
Taxonomy: Class Insecta, Order Hymenoptera, Family Formicidae, Subfamily Formicinae
Where to Find: If you spend any time hiking on Mt. Charleston, you will encounter these ants. |
